    Passing it along
I saw this on my friend's page this morning. Yeah it's a little late since it's starting today, but just in case anyone's interested.

    Taiwan Fest

    Event: Taiwan-Fest
    Location: across from union station
    Time: 5/10 (10A) -5/11 (4P)
Los Angeles, the largest metropolis on the West Coast,
has a thriving and wealthy Asian American population,
with immigrants from Taiwan being perhaps its
largest component, particularly in the San Gabriel Valley.

Taiwan-Fest aims to build friendship and understanding
within the greater Los Angeles community by presenting
the Taiwanese American cultural heritage in a fun and
celebratory environment. Taiwan-Fest will be among
the largest and most visible Asian American
    events in North America.

Everyone is invited, Taiwanese and otherwise.

There will be shows, folk art performances,
exhibits, and lots of Taiwanese food.

My immediate reaction to Iron Man:

A movie so good, it made me forget that Jeff Bridges is The Dude. Granted, it took a few scenes but it eventually happened.

That being said people talking with iron suits on just doesn't work. The performances by Downey and Bridges are very human for the rest of the film. But for some reason when they were doing ADR they must have been told they working on the Iron Man video game (Hell, they probably were). I almost expected Bridges to say "get over here!" a la Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

But that's my only big complaint. I'm glad there's a film that's just 100% big tent, slam bang action with charismatic stars. It doesn't feel too long. It doesn't get somber. They knew exactly what type of film they were making, a fun ride. Not a dumb fun ride (Thank God!). You can recommend this film to anyone who wants a good time at that pictures, which is pretty rare these days.

Deliver this, sort that, I'll make 'em all pay...
Hey everyone-- don't forget-- today's the last day you can buy Forever stamps (you know, the ones that don't need adjusting after a rate hike) at 41¢ today. Come Monday morning, they're a whopping 42¢ along with all first-class stamps!
Still, stock up and stick it to the man.

My arguement is this really couldn't have come at a worse time with inflation and gas prices. Sure, to the casual mail user, no big-- but businesses are going to feel the pinch all the more harder.

    it's hard sometimes

I spent almost all day sitting in the breakfast nook. I read and jotted my own notes all over some Spielberg script analyses by [info]toddalcott. I watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Empire of the Sun. Man, Spielberg really was great. It's easy to forget.

Anyhow, I did all of that because I was trying to approach my feature from a new angle. I jotted down copious notes for myself. I color coded things. It was crazy.

I printed about 50 pages today. And although I made page after pager of notes, I didn't write a single line of script.

    And so it goes.

    Orthodykes Anthology
    I'm eagerly anticipating this publication!

I hope someone from this community considers submitting a piece.

    CFS: Orthodykes Anthology

Just to mix things up a little: A call for subs for an anthology that has nothing to do with either the election race or Israel! Rather, Orthodykes. I don’t know any more than what’s below, so please follow submission guidelines or pass along to potentially interested parties…..

    Call for Submissions:
KEEP YOUR WIVES AWAY FROM THEM:
AN ANTHOLOGY OF WRITINGS BY AND ABOUT ORTHODYKES
    Deadline: July 31, 2008

Jewish women who are bisexual, transgender, lesbian or queer-identified live lives that can often be fraught with discord. But they have also mined the complexities and contradictions that come with these identities as sources for spiritual change, ritual innovation and community building. Keep Your Wives Away From Them is an anthology of professional scholarly essays and personal journalistic pieces that will document the stories of those who have lived in the meeting-ground of Judaism and queer desire. This anthology, in calling attention to an otherwise hidden or silent population of women, will unravel the puzzle of a seemingly impossible identity. It will also document the rich innovations in Jewish and queer life in the communities of Jewish LBTQ women and female born genderqueer individuals that have developed in around the world over the past 25 years.

    Some topics KYW will address:

Life as a LBTQ person: What are the dilemmas and difficult elements of maintaining simultaneously and LBTQ identity? What are the joys and triumphs?

Family Ties: Personal stories may describe shifting filial or sibling relationships and severed or renewed family ties.

Community: Have traditional communities integrated LBTQ women into their midst? What rules must be followed to blend in?

Trans/intersex experiences: What are the challenges of being trans/intersex/genderqueer in the religious world and what resources are there for dealing with them? How do trans people adapt or relate to Jewish law, which so rigidly distinguishes between male and female obligations?

Ritual and Jewish Law: Often discussions of “homosexuality and Judaism” are focused exclusively on men. What are the sources of Jewish law, ritual, and halakah for interpreting classical Jewish teaching on lesbianism?

    Requirements for submission:
    • The essays in KYW will reflect a multitude of experience and contexts. Essays may draw upon personal experience or may be academic/scholarly in nature; literary non-fiction is also welcome. No poetry or fiction.
    • Submissions must be carefully written and edited; personal pieces must be strong in narrative drive, dialogue, and tell a compelling story. Accepted submissions will reflect a diversity of experiences (class, culture and cultural setting, religious belief, educational background, geography, ethnicity, generation, and marital status).
    • Essays should be 5-15 pages in length and must include a bio and CV. Must be in Microsoft Word file; double spaced, with margins of an inch on either side; one-inch indent for paragraphs, with footnotes as appropriate.
    • If a submission has appeared previously in another publication, the author must obtain permission for reprint and pay any permission fees. The best twenty pieces will be picked and published in KYW by North Atlantic Books and distributed by Random House. Each accepted contributor will receive two copies of the book. Essays should be submitted as soon as possible and no later than July 31, 2008.
    • Authors may publish under a pseudonym.
    • Essays, short bios, and accompanying CV should be sent to Miryam Kabakov at KeepYourWives AT gmail.com.

About the editor: Miryam Kabakov, LMSW has been a builder, participant and beneficiary of Orthodyke communities in New York, Jerusalem and Berkeley and an activist in the Jewish LGBTQ world. As a young woman she first read Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence and made a non-binding vow to break silence for yeshiva girls everywhere.

Dear douche bags that are filming,

Why oh why are you filming again?! This is a tiny residential neighborhood, that leads to a tiny school. I work at that school. Parents need to get to that school. If you block off all surrounding streets with trucks and peeps no one can get in or out. I was understanding at first, but now I think your filming a horrific realtiy show that NEVER ENDS! Can you please go away now?

    Good bye forever,

Herzog's Woyzeck was even better than I expected, and I expected it to be good.

Pambiche, Dragonfish, and the VC were fun. And Sarah, I totally won that argument about the subjectivity of memory, at least as far as I remember, and you can never take that away from me.

I love having smart, interesting friends with similar tastes and a penchant for dramas that--while similar enough to mine that I can totally relate--are in fact not mine, and therefore fun to hear about. And it's a two-way street: same said friends tend to (I like to think) relate to my dramas and adventures, too. It makes only seeing each other once in a while all the more worth it. Lots to share.

Oh and I think they were talking about Proust maybe, but regardless, you should download some Radio Lab, starting with the Memory one.

We (almost) saw Hilary tonight. She showed up in a caravan of SUVs and motorcycle cops. Someone needs to tell the police she's not president yet, and nobody's going to assassinate her, because man, security was ridiculous as she checked into the hotel at 12:15 in the morning.

But more important than all of that: what could they have possibly found? Boy, I'm sure checking the news next Wednesday.

i have fallen in love with the rose raspberry ice cream sandwiches at milk, but alas, they only make them for valentine's day and mother's day, and as they conclude at mother's day here, february is just looking too far away. thus, my rooommate and i have decided to try our hand at recreating them, or at least the cookie portion because it is most wonderful, but we haven't the slightest clue where to get the rose flavoring....so, does anyone know where i could find rose flavoring?

After an ugly grey day yesterday....
I'd bounced outta bed ready to face the morning. I couldn't get to sleep last night so I trundled down stairs to sit at the computer to fire off a couple of reads for people and after all was typed out.. I had the notion to start clearing out my gmail account of past letters bearing ill will and hurtful emotional content which didn't serve me one damn bit.NOT to mention some interesting videos that some *ahem*  exes sent me well over a year ago to pique my interest again ehhhh NOOO! *laughs* why'd I have THAT hanging around?!?!, ..My philosophy is to weed out those elements which only shackle me to a past that for all intents and purposes is R.I.P. thus ensuring that the ground is prepared figuratively speaking for fresh growth. Once I'm done with someone or a situation, its done. Bridge is burnt, there's no going back. I've had plenty of practice...and please believe me when I say this it is without ego or bitterness FINALLY.., I can honestly look toward the future without baggage. ...Im going to howl one day and I won't be alone.

    ..

So during the day, a process in which something snapped inside and I was taking deep breaths instead of shallow half breaths. seriously I can't figure it out but a huge weight was lifted offa me. I had no idea I was emotionally carrying something that huge..its true enough that there's always going to be some sort of clearing out of residual stuff that crops up from time to time, but thankfully, unlike household dust that accumulates, the ties that bind do get severed and stay that way...thus allowing the healing to continue
    **********************************************************************************
By the way? chiseling small beeswax chunks off 12 pound blocks with a flat head screw driver takes some great strength, I swear Im getting muscles for my effort..its not like paraffin wax where I can just wrap in a plastic bag and throw it on the patio to break in a couple of manageable pieces oohhhh nooooes..Beeswax is gooey but hard as hell to separate..the results tho are  tapered candles with plenty of sheen and the colours so far are cherry red and dollar bill green! Candles Im making have this shape not too little and not too big. Since I've had plenty of practice, its getting easier to dip and roll. They sort of make themselves.

    ******************************************************************************************

Damon's just pierced Boi's earlobe twice, so the Boi is wearing the black ones in his left ear lobe....

..The guys went to Hot Topic and picked up some ear gauges. Good gawd but Damon wears some serious steel. those damn gauges weigh a pound apiece or 454 grams in each ear... he looks like he's wearing curved horns...the name of the company is Morbid Metals

I loves me kids...Boi was surprised when I told him I pierced my own ears when I was his age, so not to be outdone by his M O T H E R he sat there stoic, with no ice to numb the lobe while Damon jabbed the sharp steel needle into his ear lobe.. some blood no flinching.

"Pain" I said to Boi "is nature's way of telling you that you're alive" hehehehehe...the look on his face was AWESOME in the scowl he gave me...

    Pizza's done..see y'all later!
